Program Description:
Florence Piazzale Michelangelo

Learn the ins and outs of the hospitality industry in Florence, Italy, a European center of art, history, and culture. Students in the School of Hospitality Leadership can spend Fall quarter at Florence University of the Arts (FUA) taking major and minor courses. FUA is a modern, innovative institution that stresses experiential learning designed for international students. The Apicius International School of Hospitality is FUA’s first, largest, and academically strongest school. Its students run both a pastry shop and a full restaurant open to the public in Florence. Students organize, cater, and serve FUA events.

FUA is located across seven buildings in the historic center of Florence. Students will integrate into Florentine city life on a daily basis, shopping at local food markets, commuting to class, and socializing at local venues. FUA also offers five to seven extracurricular activities for students weekly, including Italian film screenings, cooking lessons, and sports. As the capital of the Tuscany region, Florence holds a premier position in international and Italian tourism, economy, and culture. Its geographic location allows for easy access to the other regions of Italy.

This program is for School of Hospitality students only. Students will take four courses for a total of 18 DePaul quarter hour credits. At least two of these courses must be equivalent to HSP courses at DePaul to maintain the hospitality focus of the program. Many classes include field-learning requirements, including visits to local restaurants, hotels, and cultural sites. The Fall semester will run for 15 weeks from early September to mid-December.

Course Structure Fall
Required Courses 2 Hospitality-focused courses (4.5 DPU credit hours per course)
Courses 2 courses (4.5 DPU credit hours per course)
Total Courses 4 courses (18 total DPU credit hours)

The remaining classes can fulfill student major, minor, Liberal Studies Program, or elective requirements. Florence University of the Arts offers 200+ courses per term, many of which have already been articulated for DePaul credit. Students can also add a week-long Cultural Introduction to Italy (3 credits) field learning program to the beginning of their semester.
