DePaul's study abroad program in London provides students from almost any major discipline many options for studying and interning in one of Europe's great cities. Students enroll in classes at London South Bank University (LSBU) where they will take courses with local British students. A popular feature of this program is the internship option. The CEA London team helps students find internships related to their interests or course of study. These internships can provide real work experience, the challenge of adapting to a new working culture, and skills in intercultural communication.

The program includes excursions in and around London. There are a variety of day and weekend trips that are included, as well as an assortment of immersion activities that may bring students to the theater, museums, a polo match, etc. In this way, students have an opportunity to combine their classroom learning with direct experience of British social life, arts, and culture. Previous overnight trips have included Bath and Stonehenge, and York and Fountains Abbey. Day trips have included Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford.

LSBU features seven schools in a flexible, dynamic learning environment that supports students, develops academic programming, and engages with professional industries. More than 17,000 students enroll at LSBU, of which approximately 2,000 are international students from more than 130 countries. LSBU’s campus is located on the south bank of the River Thames, a quick tube ride from Central London. DePaul students will have access to much of the curriculum available at LSBU. LSBU courses typically meet once a week. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.

The credit structure for the program is summarized in the table below:

Required # of Courses Credits Earned Per Course Total DPU Credits
4 LSBU Courses 6 DPU credit hours per every 20 LSBU credit hour course 24 DPU Credit Hours
Students participating in the internship option will take a required internship course as one of their four courses (see the Internship Option section below for more details).

How to Search for Courses:

  1. View available courses on the LSBU Module Directory
    • Fall semester (Fall quarter) = Semester 1
    • Spring semester (Winter-Spring term) = Semester 2
    • Make sure you select courses offered in the term you are interested in
  2. Select 8 courses: 4 preferred courses and 4 back-up courses (if you are participating in the internship program, one of your courses must be the required internship course - see Internship Option section below)
  3. To see how the courses will count back at DePaul, return to the top of this page and click the link "DePaul Course Equivalents" or click here.

Students participating in this program during the Spring of their senior year should not plan for degree conferral until August. While Study Abroad will do everything possible to expedite the process, we usually do not receive the overseas transcripts early enough for a June graduation conferral.

Internships last for approximately 12-14 weeks, part time. Students will work 15-20 hours per week. The exact time of day and days of the week will be agreed upon with the student’s host organization upon arrival, once student’s final course schedules are confirmed. Students should expect their work schedule to be highly structured with limited flexibility, and to work over school breaks, including Spring Break.

Students participating in the internship option are required to take the internship course as one of their four courses at LSBU.

Required Internship Course LSBU Credit Hours DePaul Course Equivalent DPU Credit Hours

Students will not find out their exact internship placement until they arrive in London. Internship students should keep an open mind when it comes to internship placements. The more specific the request, the harder it is for CEA staff to place students. CEA will do their best to match students with an internship in their field, however, placements are subject to availability and CEA cannot guarantee placement at a particular site. Please note that it can be challenging to secure internships in Medicine/Health care, Financial Consulting (e.g. Stock Markets), Journalism/Media, Arts & Theatre (performance), Advertising and Law & Law Courts.

Internship placements are available in a variety of fields such as:
  • Business
  • Fashion
  • Fine Arts and Arts Management
  • Government and Politics
  • Health-Related Organizations
  • Information Technology
  • Law
  • Media and Communications
  • Sports Management
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Theatre

While in London, students will be accommodated in the residence halls at LSBU.

All students participating in study abroad will be charged both tuition and a program fee. Tuition is billed at the student's regular DePaul tuition rate based on the number of credits enrolled. Click for the Fall quarter program fee or the Winter-Spring program fee for your program. Read the details carefully to understand exactly what is included. Please also note the withdrawal policy.

DePaul offers several types of scholarships for students studying abroad, and students should visit the scholarship page early in the application process for information on eligibility and deadlines. Students are also encouraged to speak with the DePaul financial aid office for more information about financing their study abroad experience.

DePaul Study Abroad is carefully monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic, and this program is currently moving forward. If the program is canceled prior to departure, students will be refunded 100% of the program fee and withdrawn from any associated classes with no penalty or tuition charges. Study Abroad has also modified the standard Withdrawal Policy, and any students who commit to this program and decide to withdraw 90+ days prior to the program start date will not be charged any withdrawal fees. For more information, go to the DePaul Study Abroad COVID-19 Updates page.

If you are planning to study abroad and do not have a passport, apply for one immediately. Some programs require students to obtain student visas. In that case, contact the country's local consulate or embassy for up-to-date instructions. As of this publication, students on this program enrolled in the internship DO need a visa. Students enrolled in the full curriculum can apply for a short-term student visa ahead of time or can apply for the visa upon arriving by showing a proof of enrollment letter from LSBU (hardcopy of original letter required) at the airport. Students cannot enter the UK from Ireland. To find out more information about the visa process for your select country(ies), visit our Visa Information Page. Please note that visa requirements can change quickly. Study Abroad will update this website to reflect changes as they become available.
