Program Description:
Students
SPS students will study values-based leadership approaches during the Autumn Quarter at DePaul, and then use this knowledge to explore leadership challenges in India with students at the DePaul Institute of Science and Technology (DIST) during the December interim. DIST is a graduate institute located in Angamaly (a suburb of Kochi) in the tropical, scenic, southern state of Kerala, India.

Program meets Sunday – Friday. Students should plan to arrive at DIST by Sunday afternoon and should schedule their departures for late afternoon on Friday.

The time at DIST includes classroom input and intercultural activities, field visits, and discussions with DIST faculty & leaders.

The goal of this program is to make participants aware of the social, cultural, economic, ethical and political realities and challenges for institutions and leaders in India. We strive to create learning opportunities for students to understand development challenges and the role of NGOs, the government, and for-profit entities in developing and implementing values-based approaches to social issues and policy initiatives.

To participate in this program, students must register for MPS 520 - Values-Centered Leadership for the Autumn Quarter, and in addition register for the December Study Abroad extension to the course.

Patricia Bombard BVM, D.Min., serves at DePaul University as director of Vincent on Leadership: The Hay Project, which conducts research, training, and education furthering the leadership legacy of Vincent de Paul. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member in DePaul’s School of Public Service, teaching values-centered leadership in Chicago, abroad, and online.

All students will be enrolled in the following course:

Course MPS 520, Values-Centered Leadership
Credits 4 credit hours
Term registered Fall 2018
Taught by Patricia Bombard
Course description The School of Public Service has a formal agreement with the DePaul Institute of Science and Technology (DIST) located in the town of Angamaly, close to the city of Kochi (earlier Cochin) in the tropical, southern state of Kerala. Kerala provides an interesting development model with human development indices that rival Europe and the U.S. This facilitated learning and reflection experience includes field visits to NGOs and interactions with DIST graduate students (MBA & MSW) on issues of culture, values and leadership. The course utilizes the resources available at the Institute in planning the sessions, including faculty and guest lectures, computer and library facilities, and boarding, lodging, and classroom space.
Please note that although some courses are registered in a particular term, some coursework or final assignments may be due in a different term. E.g. Course registered in winter quarter, but coursework is due in spring quarter once the travel component of the program is complete.

DIST, Angamaly: Students will be accommodated in a hotel close to the scenic DIST campus in double rooms with attached bath. DIST is located in Angamaly, around 7 miles from Kochi International Airport and around 20 miles from the towns of Kochi and Ernakulam

All students participating in study abroad will be charged both tuition (billed at the regular DePaul tuition rate, based on the number of credits enrolled) and a program fee. Please read the program fee details carefully to understand exactly what is included, as this can vary from program to program. If the program fee is posted, be sure to note whether the fee is current or from a previous year (past program fees may serve as a guide until the current program fee is available). If the current program fee has not yet been posted, please check back closer to the application deadline. Please also note the withdrawal policy.

DePaul offers several types of scholarships for students studying abroad, and students should visit the scholarship page early in the application process for information on eligibility and deadlines.

If you are planning to study abroad and do not have a passport, apply for one immediately. Some programs require travelers to obtain visas. In that case, contact the local consulates or embassies of the countries you will be visiting for up-to-date instructions on how to apply for them.
